BAH - Basic Allowance for HousingBasic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is based on geographic duty location, pay grade, and dependency status. The intent of BAH is to provide uniformed service members with permanent duty within the 50 United States accurate and equitable housing compensation based on housing costs in local civilian housing markets, and is payable when government quarters are not provided. Continued improvement in housing allowances represents the Department's commitment to the preservation of a compensation and benefit structure that provides servicemembers with a suitable and secure standard of living to sustain a trained, experienced, and ready military force.
![]() Remember, 2011 BAH is calculated on local rents. Mortgage amounts are not used to compute Basic Allowance for Housing. You may be able to offset some or all of your monthly mortgage payments using BAH, but it's not designed to do so. Make your financial plans carefully when factoring in BAH as a contributing source of income for your house payment.
